Veterans Day is this Tuesday November 11th, and many Americans will be saluting the men and women who have served our nation and those who are actively serving today. The holiday is one of the few American holidays that occurs on the same date every year and was first named Armistice Day, when it originated in 1926.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Armistice Day on November 11, 1919 to honor the deceased military members who served in duty during World War I. In 1938, Armistice Day became a legal national holiday.
World War II veteran Raymond Weeks in 1945 worked to expand the concept of Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans and enlisted the aid of General Dwight Eisenhower, who also supported concept of Veterans Day. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill into law changing the holiday to Veterans Day.
