Edox Watches founded in 1884 in Biel/Bienne Switzerland is a pre-eminent watchmaker celebrated for introducing the Delfin timepiece in 1961, the first timepiece that was water resistant to 200 meters, setting the standards for both shock protection and water resistance in the watch industry.
The brand was founded by Christian Ruefli-Flury, a Swiss watchmaker who was convinced by his wife Pauline to start his own watch company. Ruefli-Flury named the company Edox, which means “the hour” in ancient Greek. An hourglass logo was developed in 1900 to compliment the brand name. This emblem is still featured on the dial of each of the brand’s timepieces. The brand soon became respected for their precision pocket-watches…a legacy that lasted until Ruefli-Flury’s death in 1921.
Robert Kaufman-Hug took over the reins of Edox thereafter and moved the company’s emphasis from pocket watches to wristwatches. By 1955, the demand for Edox wristwatches was incredibly strong and Edox employed over 500 watchmakers at their Swiss factory.
The introduction of the Delfin watch was followed by the Edox Hydrosub timepiece in 1965, which was water-resistant to 500 meters. In 1970, Edox released the Geoscope timepiece, one of the very first world time zone watches.
The brand’s innovative firsts followed in 1998 with the release of Belmons Ultra Slim watch, “the slimmest wristwatch in the world” … a record they still hold today.
Today Edox holds the distinction of being the official timekeeper of the Class 1 Powerboat Championship competition, the World Rally Championship for auto racing as well as the Dakar Rallye Raid auto racing competition.
